Is The Idol's Suzanna Son a Real Singer?
The Idol breakout star is so much more than her image on the show.
Sam Levinson's The Idol proved to be a huge missed opportunity for The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, as their first major roles in a high-profile production were ruined by fans' overwhelmingly negative reaction to the show's provocative themes and depiction of nudity and violence.
But while Depp and The Weeknd's acting careers may be in turmoil after The Idol's flop, it looks like some of the supporting cast are finally getting the recognition they deserve, and Suzanna Son is definitely the luckiest performer of the entire ensemble of the HBO sex drama.
Suzanna's singing was one of the highlights of the entire show, as her incredible voice made The Idol's soundtrack feel fresh and compelling. Her duets with The Weeknd began trending on YouTube the moment they premiered on the show, forcing people to wonder whether Suzanna was actually a real singer and not just an actress.
In reality, Suzanna Son's success in Hollywood was completely accidental. She was first spotted by Sean Baker at one of the film screenings, where the director asked her to audition for his movie Red Rocket. Eventually, Suzanna got the lead role and even sang in the movie, earning Gotham and Independent Spirit Award nominations.
And it looks like it was her singing in Red Rocket that led the producers to cast her in The Idol.
Unlike BlackPink's Jennie, Suzanna was on the show from the beginning, working with original showrunner Amy Seimetz before she was fired by Levinson and The Weeknd. It was rumored at the time that Suzanna wouldn't return to the new version of The Idol, but luckily, she agreed to star in it, stealing the show as Chloe, one of Tedros' up-and-coming singers.
In the show, Suzanna sang her own songs, making viewers fall in love with her instantly. And, considering that her performance was one of the few great things about The Idol, it's clear that Hollywood won't let go of the talented performer, casting her in future movies and series.
Suzanna Son has also shared the stage with The Weeknd during his solo concerts around the world, so she may have a bright future as a pop star as well.
