Is Sweet Magnolias Our Guilty Pleasure or Just Guilty of Being Corny?
Fans are not sure why they continue to watch the show.
Netflix's Sweet Magnolias may be one of the most popular melodramas in the streaming giant's library, but not everyone agrees with the show's insane ratings, saying that it's far too predictable and cheesy.
However, the recently released third season was supposed to put the haters to rest by correcting all the mistakes of the previous two installments without adding any new ones to the mix. Unfortunately, the new chapter in the Sweet Magnolias story failed to achieve that goal, forcing even die-hard fans to reconsider their allegiance to the show.
But even after the third season proved to be a major disappointment, some fans still defend the series as a fairly enjoyable project, even if it falls under the guilty pleasure moniker. But is Sweet Magnolias really a guilty pleasure, or is it just guilty of being corny and boring?
A year ago, a lot of people could have easily agreed on the first option, but after Season 3 premiered early last month, the number of Sweet Magnolias supporters dwindled at an incredible rate, with more and more people calling it a cheesy, poorly produced mess.
'I liked the first 2 seasons. This one is just a whole other level of corny. I am in the middle of Episode 3 and just don't think I can keep going. At this point, it's just like they are mocking the accents,' one fan said.
Other people disagree, however, arguing that the show was trite and creepy from the very first season, but still quite enjoyable. Just like Hallmark movies and daytime soaps, Sweet Magnolias delights viewers with its sense of banality and coziness, and many fans are willing to overlook bad writing and acting because of it.
'Because it's a cliche show with Hallmark as the production company… you know, you don't have to watch if you don't like it,' another fan argued.
Needless to say, Sweet Magnolias is not a show for everyone, but if you want something light and unpretentious to binge on after a long day at work, it might be the right series for you.
