Is Latest Rookie Crossover Worth Watching? Fans Noped Out Early
It seems ABC is still struggling to address the crossover dilemma.
Among the numerous police procedurals that saturate prime-time television, The Rookie distinguishes itself with its unique premise of following a rookie rather than a seasoned veteran, but the twist is that the rookie is no spring chicken and is played by fan-favourite cult actor Nathan Fillion. While the show remains a hit with viewers five years after its debut, The Rookie has come into criticism over its spinoff series, Feds.
Starring Niecy Nash as the oldest FBI rookie, Simone Clark, Feds premiered just last year but has already received widespread disdain from fans, who label it soulless and entirely reliant on the success of the original show.
ABC is determined to address this issue by promoting Feds through any means necessary, including crossover episodes with The Rookie to compel people to watch the spinoff – a tactic that has not been well-received at all.
Earlier this week, another crossover event went on air, featuring The Rookie's episode 21, Going Under, and Feds' episode 21, Bloodline. Fans were left wondering if this crossover would finally be worth watching. Unfortunately, it fell short of expectations, as those who watched the Feds portion of the story deemed it a shallow effort, punctuated by two brief scenes featuring Fillion.
‘No real point in crossing over other than cross-promotion. Nolan basically was in two scenes, first time to explain the case and then to just stand there while they're talking to a person related to the case,’ one fan commented.
Viewers are understandably frustrated with ABC for producing numerous crossover episodes between the two shows, promoting them as must-see events, but consistently failing to deliver quality content on Feds.
With the spinoff being such an unpopular show, many are questioning the network's decision to renew it for a second season, fearing that more unnecessary crossovers will plague the upcoming season of The Rookie. ABC, it's time to do something about this mess; fans are losing patience!
