Is Iam Really "Boring," or Are American Idol Fans Just Not Paying Attention?
Some fans doubt that Iam really deserves to win.
American Idol Season 21 featured a lot of extremely talented musicians, but none left as big an impression as Hawaii's Iam Tongi. This soft-spoken kid blew away the other contestants with his heartfelt ballads accompanied by an acoustic guitar, and most of the audience and the judges think he is truly a one-of-a-kind performer.
However, even Iam's great voice and lovable personality couldn't convince some of the viewers to vote for him — and here's why.
According to some fans, Iam's stage presence lacks excitement, as all he ever does is stand in the middle of the stage, playing his guitar and singing into the microphone, while his competitors are jumping all over, exuding charisma and showing off their larger-than-life personalities.
Because of this, Iam is often described as a 'boring' performer, unable to capture the attention of the judges and the audience. But is this really true?
'I've seen too many posts about him being "overrated" and "boring" because he just stands there and sings the same type of songs. You ever heard of if it ain't broke don't fix it? The way the crowd reacts to him is insane, Ryan can't even get a word in after he performs. Let's be real, Iam has this in the bag,' one fan argued.
And really, Iam's magnetic personality is in no way dependent on his stage demeanor, as he is able to turn the crowd into a screaming mob just with his soft voice and heartfelt lyrics, and he doesn't need to engage in ridiculous antics like the other contestants. It looks like the judges already love him for what he is, and they must be very happy to see a contestant who is so different from the typical American Idol.
'I wonder about people that need constant mania. Some of my favorite artists are the ones that just sit there at a piano or play a guitar and sing songs that mean something,' another fan said.
Not only is he not boring, Iam is one of the most captivating singers American Idol has ever seen, and that is why many people see him as the frontrunner of the current season. With only a couple of episodes left until the finale, we'll soon find out if these fans are right.
Episode 18 of American Idol will arrive on ABC on May 14, 2023.
