'Innocent Until Proven Guilty': Anthony Mackie Stands by Jonathan Majors in Assault Storm
Mackie is standing by his colleague, at least for now.
Just a year ago, Jonathan Majors looked like the most promising actor in Hollywood, starring in smaller, well-received films while joining the MCU as Kang the Conqueror, the main villain of the current phase. It was obvious that Majors was preparing to take his career to a whole other level in the years to come — but then, the sexual assault scandal broke.
The actor was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman in his apartment earlier this year, and although his lawyers immediately announced they had evidence that would clear Majors of the accusations, the star is still scheduled to appear in court and could be sentenced to up to two years in jail for his alleged crimes.
Shortly after the scandal went public, Majors was fired from a number of his upcoming projects, but Marvel Studios has yet to officially let him go, waiting for the verdict to be announced. The producers' reluctance to fire Majors is understandable, as the whole current phase of the MCU has been built around his character, so recasting would probably cost the studio a pretty penny, and it would obviously postpone production for a long time.
Moreover, it looks like other MCU actors still believe that Jonathan Majors is innocent. Anthony Mackie, who will play the new version of Captain America in the coming years, recently shared his comments about his colleague's cancellation with the media and fans.
'That's one of the staples of this country. Nothing has been proven about this dude. Nothing. So, everyone is innocent until proven guilty. That's all I can say. It's crazy where we are as a society. But as a country, everyone is innocent until proven guilty,' Mackie said.
Needless to say, fans were quite irritated by the actor's remark, arguing that Mackie was simply trying to sweep the allegations against Majors under the rug.
'People on the wrong side always try to bring legal burdens of proof into what are ultimately moral arguments,' one fan said.
We'll have to wait until the beginning of August to find out if Majors is really guilty or if the whole world canceled the actor for no reason.
