How Much Does The Marvels Need to Make at the Box Office to Break Even?
The film has an impressive goal.
The year is almost over, but it keeps giving us new premieres. 2023 has already seen a slew of superhero films. To date, five DC and Marvel movies have hit the screens, including The Flash, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantimania, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. However, there are still a few more releases to look forward to before year's end, with The Marvels perhaps being the most anticipated.
Slated for a November 10th release, the newest chapter in Brie Larson's Captain Marvel saga will have the actress return to explore the mystery connecting her character to Teyonah Parris's Monica Rambeau and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan. As the fourth Marvel release of 2023, The Marvels boasts a hefty $275 million budget. Will it manage to break even?
Expensive Stellar Cast
The Marvels isn't the first chapter in the Captain Marvel branch of the franchise, suggesting a significant raise in Brie Larson's paycheck for reprising the role. Neither are Teyonah Parris and Kamala Khan newcomers to the MCU; both actresses previously graced Disney+'s TV shows, WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, respectively.
Furthermore, the upcoming Marvel premiere will feature Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury – one of the earliest characters in the franchise, present in nearly every Marvel film even before the establishment of the shared universe. Interestingly, The Marvels will also see Jude Law returning as Yon-Rogg. However, the exact trajectory of his character remains under wraps for now.
Given the stellar cast, Marvel is undoubtedly compensating them handsomely, accounting for a significant chunk of the budget. Another major cost driver is the intricate visual effects that Marvel movies are renowned for. So, how much does the film need to make to recoup what the studio spent on it?
Break Even Point
On the plus side, The Marvels already secured almost $55 million from the British government, courtesy of an incentive program encouraging film productions in the UK. Thus, the film's net budget stands closer to $220 million, implying that the movie would need to rake in at least $440 million to be deemed financially successful.
Given the ongoing actors' strike, promoting The Marvels is a challenge, which might dampen audience enthusiasm upon its release. Nonetheless, hopes are high for The Marvels to deliver a strong performance.
