It looks like the beloved series is gearing up for a truly heartbreaking storyline this year.

The British series All Creatures Great and Small, about the life of a veterinarian in the lush English countryside of the 1930s, became a huge hit across the Atlantic when PBS bought the rights to air the show in the US. Many people fell in love with the story and the series' cozy, feel-good atmosphere, describing it as the perfect soap opera.

However, as the third season's cliffhanger indicates, hard times are approaching Skeldale House, and the cast members also seem to be afraid about what the upcoming installment has in store for their characters.

At the end of Season 3, Callum Woodhouse's Tristan Farnon left his friends and family to join the army and fight in World War II. Viewers were heartbroken, as Woodhouse's performance was one of the reasons the show became such a phenomenon, and seeing his character go off to a possible death made fans dread the upcoming season.

Rachel Shenton, who plays Helen Alderson, seems to agree with the audience, revealing that the atmosphere behind the scenes really changed when Woodhouse left the show.

'It was still All Creatures, it was still steeped in community and love and togetherness. But there was also this undercurrent of fear and this feeling that it won't be the same again, and I thought it perfectly captured a little bit of everything. I think it's that unspoken thing of "Gosh, this is very close now and it could only be a matter of time",' Shenton said.

This seems to perfectly correspond with the audience's fearful expectations that the feel-good atmosphere of their beloved show might be partially destroyed in the upcoming season, as the themes of war and loss take center stage.

While Tristan has left for the war, people are still hoping that he will return safely and rejoin the main characters by the end of Season 4 — after all, this development is suggested by the character's storyline in the original book by James Herriot. However, the producers have the right to take liberties with the adaptation, and fans can't help but dread the upcoming installment, especially since the wait for Season 4 may take longer than expected.
