The pop singer has just supported an important cause.

While it's clear that Taylor Swift is the most popular celebrity in the world right now, with her ongoing Eras tour continuing to break records and her albums doing especially well on streaming, it seems that people downplay the singer's influence when it comes to political and social issues. However, Swift herself is definitely interested in American politics, and her recent surprising plea to fans certainly proves it.

During National Voter Registration Day last Tuesday, Swift decided to remind her fans of the importance of registering to vote by posting about it on her Instagram. The singer is certainly invested in President Joe Biden winning the upcoming 2024 election, and she has already done quite a bit to make that happen.

A crazy reaction

After she posted her plea to fans, more than 35,000 people actually registered to vote, which is definitely a record. While this number may seem insignificant compared to the number of US residents, it's important to note that just like Swift herself, her fans are supporting Biden in the upcoming election, and such a number can totally help him overcome Donald Trump once again.

However, some of the fans are already arguing that getting so many people to register doesn't mean that the upcoming election will be successful, as most of the people will probably not bother to vote.

'The bigger issue is getting the same people to vote. Encouraging them to register is the first step towards participating in elections. This is a big deal for those who haven’t registered before,' a fan said.

Can Swift really do this?

While it's totally commendable that Swift has encouraged so many people to register to vote, some fans are actually questioning whether celebrities should have the power to decide who to vote for, as this can really undermine the democratic principles of universal suffrage.

'That’s kind of dangerous for the same reasons allowing corporations to donate massive sums of money to political campaigns. The massively wealthy shouldn’t be the ones having this much influence on our election. The wealthy are only going to endorse candidates who have favorable policies towards them, not us,' a fan noted.
