The iconic show returned.

While The Simpsons is Matt Groening's most popular show, Futurama is definitely his most beloved, as fans have been obsessed with it since the first season premiered on Fox in 1999. Despite its critical success, however, Futurama has always struggled with ratings, which is why it has been canceled multiple times, most recently by Comedy Central in 2013. But in the current age of streaming, it was only a matter of time before the iconic animated show would be revived, and Hulu decided to do the honors this year.

The revived Futurama has already premiered a bunch of new episodes, and while fans were thrilled to see Fry, Leela, and Bender again, the whole new season felt a little strange, with people using the word 'dated' a lot to describe the vibe of the revived show.

Safe and uninspiring

While Futurama has always been known for its adult humor and discussion of important issues, it looks like Groening and his crew may have jumped the shark a bit with the revived season, as none of the episodes released so far felt interesting or compelling. On the contrary, fans were surprised to see Futurama in the year 2023, dealing with topics like vaccinations or Amazon being bad.

'It’s like every other season. For some reason, the writers choose to base episodes off of current events from when they’re writing which feel super outdated by the time an episode actually releases. And those episodes disappoint,' a fan said.

What's worse is that the writers don't even try to make these topics feel at least a little controversial. This really ruins the legacy of Futurama, which was never afraid to tackle important issues. In any case, fans would have loved to see Futurama as it was twenty years ago, inspiring and divisive.

'To me it feels like they're just playing it as safe as possible. A vaccine episode, a crypto episode, an Amazon episode, a Dune parody. It just feels like they're going for the most obvious jokes whenever possible and never add much to it. So, in the words of the great Lisa Simpson: Meh,' a fan noted.
