The Korean star's scenes in the show disappointed the audience.

When it was announced that BlackPink's Jennie would be joining The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp on HBO's The Idol, millions of K-Pop fans began following the show's development, eager to see the popular singer in front of the camera.

However, when the first episode was dropped, fans were quite disappointed to see that Jennie's character, Dyanne, was just a backup dancer for the main character. However, the recently released second episode seems to have made people forget all about that.

In it, it was revealed that Dyanne was actually in on Tedros' plan to corrupt Jocelyn and force her to join his cult, and it was Jennie's character who introduced Jocelyn to Tedros. While this twist is great in terms of narrative progression, fans can't help but feel a little cheated after seeing the scene because the writing for Jennie's character was rather sub-par, to say the least.

While the scene was supposed to be charged with sex and danger, with The Weeknd and Jennie engaging in some suggestive conversation, fans felt that the writing was so dull that it was almost impossible to watch the two singers play it without laughing. They came across as complete amateurs, and it had nothing to do with their acting skills; it's just the material they were working off was garbage.

'I think Jennie's character could be an interesting one but the dialogue is just so bad. And this is by the same guy who does Euphoria,' a fan said.

However, some viewers believe that Jennie's fans' perception of her also has a detrimental effect on her role in The Idol, as most fans did not expect to see her in a sexy femme fatale role.

'It felt off character for her but mostly because of the way we're used to seeing her. I think she did a good job, but the show's a mess and that can't be helpful. She's just acting on a (very bad) fictional tv show. Why do people take things so seriously?' another fan wondered.

The Idol Episode 3 will arrive on HBO on 18 June 2023.
