Heartstopper Season 2 Ending on a Cliffhanger is a Good Thing, So Stop Complaining
The controversial finale is actually okay.
The second season of the popular LGBTQ+ romance drama only dropped yesterday, yet thousands of fans have already finished binge-watching it. Many have since taken to the internet to share their opinions on the latest chapter in Nick and Charlie's story.
Although the season itself was a delightful treat for fans of both the first season and the original graphic novels, it would appear that the new instalment had a few minor issues that detracted somewhat from the enjoyment of the story for some fans.
The most common complaint is that the storyline became somewhat bloated compared to the first season. A lot of supporting characters like Imogen, Isaac, and Tao were given significantly more screen time to develop their stories, which caused the season to feel a bit disjointed and somewhat chaotic in places. However, that is seen as a minor issue and most complaints are directed at the season’s finale, which many see as extremely controversial.
For two seasons, fans have been waiting to see Nick and Charlie finally confess their love for each other by uttering those three crucial words. And in the final moments of episode 8, it seemed they might finally reach that milestone, as Nick was about to say 'I love–' before being interrupted by his parents.
Understandably, fans were quite disappointed that the writers denied them the opportunity to hear the boys express their love for each other. The fact that the season ended with Charlie writing an I-love-you message to Nick only to then stop short of sending it made things even worse.
However, even though some fans are criticising the writers for such a clichéd cliffhanger, in reality, this unexciting but effective strategy should be commended, not derided. With such a tantalising cliffhanger, Netflix will have no option but to keep giving fans more seasons of Heartstopper.
In their own awkward way, the writers have attempted to make it clear that the beloved show won't be going away anytime soon, even if fans have to wait a while to finally hear Nick and Charlie say ‘I love you’ to each other.
