Vision star Paul Bettany has reportedly surged to the top of Warner Bros.' list to play Voldemort in HBO Max's upcoming Harry Potter series.

Warner Bros.' Harry Potter TV reboot keeps moving, and the conversation has shifted to the last face you want to meet in a corridor: Voldemort. The latest chatter says the studio has a very familiar name circled for the Dark Lord.

Where the show stands

The series is deep into production and aiming to land in early 2027. The plan is straightforward: seven seasons adapting the seven original novels, with a brand-new cast stepping into the robes. Season 1 tackles Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone across eight episodes, which lines up neatly with the first book's 30th anniversary window.

The Voldemort rumor

Here is the new wrinkle: Paul Bettany is reportedly at the top of Warner Bros.' list to play Voldemort in the series. As of now, there is no indication an official offer has gone out. It is a rumor, but it is a credible one, and it tracks with how the character would be used early on. Expect a light touch in Season 1, then a much larger presence from around Season 4 onward.

Why Bettany makes sense

Bettany has been a Marvel mainstay for over a decade, starting as the voice of JARVIS in 2008's Iron Man before evolving into Vision. Between live-action and animation, he has nine MCU appearances out in the world and is set to return as Vision on Disney+ in 2026. On the flip side of the moral ledger, he brought some icy menace to Star Wars as Dryden Vos in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story, and earlier played memorable antagonists in 2006's The Da Vinci Code (Silas) and Firewall (Bill Cox). If Warner Bros. wants a Voldemort who can toggle between seductive calm and absolute terror, I can see the logic.

The shadow of Fiennes, and the fan casting drumbeat

Ralph Fiennes defined Voldemort on the big screen starting with 2005's Goblet of Fire and showed up in three of the next four films as the wizard obsessed with power, immortality, and bending the world to his will. Fans have loudly floated names like Cillian Murphy and Matt Smith for the role this time around. Bettany would bring a different flavor, plus plenty of franchise mileage.

Who is already on the Hogwarts rolls

The young trio has been locked:

  • Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter
  • Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
  • Arabella Stout as Hermione Granger
  • John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
  • Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
  • Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
  • Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick

Beyond those, expect a bench full of heavy-hitting British talent as the wider cast fills in.

The takeaway

If Bettany locks in, he would barely brush Season 1 but loom large as the series hits its middle stretch. For now, the show is zeroing in on that early 2027 debut on HBO Max, with a fresh cast, an eight-episode first year, and the biggest bad in modern YA fantasy waiting in the wings.
