Good Omens Season 2 Sets Up Season 3 (But Fans Aren't Sure We Need It)
It would appear that the favourite cult show will be getting a third season.
Amazon's Good Omens, a massive hit in 2019, captivated fans with its eccentric world-building by the late Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman and the great chemistry between Michael Sheen, who portrayed the angel Aziraphale, and David Tennant, who excelled as the demon Crowley. However, Amazon's propensity for cancelling popular shows after just one season had fans fearing they'd never see the unlikely pair on their screens again.
Fortunately, the streaming service delighted fans by announcing that Good Omens would return for a second season this summer.
Despite fans' eagerness to see what Aziraphale and Crowley are up to in season two, there is some unease about Gaiman's recent comments regarding the show's future. The fact that Gaiman chose to write an entirely new story for the second season, rather than basing it on a plot he and Pratchett had previously created, has done little to assuage the concerns of longtime Good Omens fans.
'Because the hypothetical season three exists, there is a story that is there, and I didn't feel that we could drive straight from season one into that. I knew what the stakes were,' Gaiman said.
Thus, it appears that the renowned writer is already planning a third season, which should be fantastic news for fans of the original material, right? Not necessarily. Fans are concerned that Gaiman is attempting to transform Good Omens into a forever franchise, even though he and Pratchett conceived the story as a short novella with a beginning and an end, not a multi-season spectacle.
However, even though some fear that Gaiman might compromise the beloved characters for financial gain, others defend the creator, asserting that the hypothetical third season will be based on a plot co-created with Pratchett, and would thus honour the late author's memory.
Regardless, Amazon hasn't yet officially renewed Good Omens for a third season. The streaming giant is likely waiting to see how the second season performs and will make the final decision about season three based on that.
Good Omens Season 2 will be released on Amazon Prime on 28 July 2023.
