Forget Jon Snow: Reddit's Top 5 Obscure Game of Thrones Characters
Sometimes discussing the same characters over and over again gets really tiring.
While Game of Thrones is often described as one of the most well-written fantasy sagas of all time, most fans tend to think only of the main characters when making that assessment, even though George R. R. Martin's world is full of compelling supporting characters who are constantly overshadowed by towering figures like Daenerys or Jaime Lannister.
Fans over on Reddit have taken it upon themselves to right this wrong, calling attention to at least some of the best obscure characters that populate Westeros. Forget your Tyrions and Jon Snows, these five supporting characters are the real deal.
5. Syrio Forel
Arya's first sword instructor was a rather strange fellow — Syrio was obviously a master swordsman and one of the greatest fighters of his time, yet he worked as a teacher, not a Kingsguard, for instance. Syrio helped Arya learn many valuable lessons, and when he was apparently killed by Meryn Trant, Arya vowed to take revenge in her former teacher's name.
4. Maester Aemon
Aemon was the only known Targaryen left in Westeros at the time, but his royal blood never made him an egoist or a power-hungry maniac, as he quietly served as maester of the Night's Watch. Viewers loved seeing Aemon talk openly with Jon Snow and called him a great advisor and a well-written character.
3. Wun Weg Wun Dar Wun
Rescued by Jon Snow after a battle, this towering Free Folk giant decided to join the new Night's Watch commander at the Battle of the Bastards. Wun Wun fought like a champion, and though he was killed in the end, both Snow and fans will never forget this kind-hearted giant.
2. Jeor Mormont
The Night's Watch Commander was a rather complicated person who often crossed moral boundaries in his life, but that complexity and moral grayness was exactly why fans loved him and described him as a great character who was killed far too soon.
1. Barristan Selmy
The most honorable man in all of Westeros, Ser Barristan served in the Kingsguard for over 40 years, never once tarnishing his reputation as a gentleman and the greatest swordsman on the continent. Fans loved him for his personality, so seeing Barristan die was one of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire series.
