Fans are rooting for Sarah Chalke's character, even though the prognosis is not good, to say the least.

The Netflix series, which centered on two friends, Kate and Tully, who helped each other through their teens and into their 40s, became a minor hit for the streaming giant in 2021, as fans loved following Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke's crazy onscreen chemistry.

While the show was set to end after its second season, as Kristin Hannah's bestselling book didn't have enough material to keep it going any longer, Netflix managed to sweeten the deal by making the second installment a two-parter.

The second half of season two is about to premiere in April, and fans are eager to get back to the story as soon as possible, especially since the first part of the season had them hooked on a heartbreaking twist.

In the first half of season two, viewers were stunned to learn that Kate had been diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, which suddenly turned her entire life upside down. Fans are rightfully concerned for their beloved heroine, but one fact keeps their hopes from being dashed.

In the original book, the character succumbed to her illness, leaving her best friend Tully alone. That finale was a heartbreaking but realistic end to the book, but people are refusing to see the same fate for Kate repeated on the show, and it looks like showrunner Maggie Friedman is low-key supporting them.

'There are definitely story points and things that happen that people who have read the book and love the book will be excited to see and will recognize. And then there are places that we went that are very different that have some suspense and things they weren't expecting. We really tried to walk that line to honor the book and also go in our own direction,' Friedman said to Glamour.

Does this mean that Kate could survive her diagnosis and reunite with Tully? Some fans certainly think so, hoping that, after everything the two friends have been through together over the past three decades, the producers of Firefly Lane are not going to have them capitulate in the face of the terrible disease.

Firefly Lane Season 2 Part 2 will arrive on Netflix on April 27, 2023.
