Emma Mackey Was Cast in Barbie for a "Joke" That Got Deleted

There is no doubt that Greta Gerwig's Barbie is one of the best films released this year, seeing how both fans and critics seem to have fallen in love with it at first sight. This satirical project, portraying the fictional life of a real-life doll, was lauded for its excellent script and performances by Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie. However, that doesn't mean the film was without issues, the most noticeable being the underutilization of numerous renowned actors.

It was a delight to see Emma Mackey, of Sex Education fame, finally feature in a big Hollywood production. However, fans couldn't help but notice how inconspicuous her role in the film was: she was essentially little more than a glorified extra in Barbie. But that wasn't Gerwig's initial plan.

Two Sisters

It's common knowledge that fans have long noticed the striking resemblance between Robbie and Mackey. It would appear that Gerwig decided to exploit this by casting Mackey for one solitary reason - to humorously highlight how similar Robbie and Mackey look.

However, the joke never made it into the film. After the film opened in theaters, Robbie finally disclosed why the joke was omitted from Barbie's theatrical cut.

'She plays one of the Barbies in the movie pretty much because Greta and I thought it would be funny. We were gonna do this whole joke about us looking similar. And then once we got all dressed up as our Barbies, we were kind of like, "We don't actually look that similar". Like, when she's got her brown hair and I've got my blonde hair, we don't look that similar, so we didn't put that joke in the movie,' Robbie said.

Yes, the joke was scrapped because Robbie and Gerwig concluded that Mackey didn't really look enough like Robbie, which is peculiar given the two stars' uncanny resemblance, even with different hair colors. Perhaps they should have given Mackey a blonde wig and gone ahead with the joke; what do you think?
