Doctor Who's New Sidekick: Who Will Replace Millie Gibson in the Next Installment?
Rumor has it that the actress won't be reprising her role in the next season, which will star Ncuti Gatwa as the titular character.
Summary
- Doctor Who is one of the most iconic shows with a long history on the air.
- Millie Gibson will leave the show after season 14.
- Doctor Who's next companion will be played by a talented young actress.
With the advent of streaming services, the number of new TV shows released each year seems to have increased tenfold. As a result, new projects emerge every year, with some, like Virgin River or The Boys, gaining a lot of traction and attracting hordes of fans. However, few series are as influential and impactful as the BBC's hit sci-fi drama Doctor Who.
Debuting in 1963, Doctor Who ran for twenty-six years before ending its run in 1989. Fortunately, the beloved show was revived in 2005 and has since spanned fourteen seasons, with the most recent premiering in May 2024 following the 2023 Christmas special. Of course, the franchise has seen a plethora of actors come and go over the years. And it looks like that trend is continuing.
Millie Gibson Has Reportedly Been Replaced After Only One Season
In addition to following the titular character through their travels through time and space, the show has another distinguishing feature – a Companion.
Over the show's impressive run, dozens, if not hundreds, of actors have portrayed Doctor Who's plus one, including Karen Gillan, Catherine Tate, Matt Lucas, and Kylie Minogue. Starting with the festive episode in 2023, Millie Gibson of Coronation Street fame has played the role.
Unfortunately, the actress is said to have been dropped from the show after a single season, which hasn't aired yet. So while Gibson will appear in the upcoming fourteenth installment of Doctor Who, she will be replaced in the next Christmas special and will make brief appearances in season 15.
Who Will Be Doctor Who's Next Companion?
According to reports, Varada Sethu will step into Millie Gibson's shoes to become Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who's plus one in season 15 of the beloved BBC sci-fi drama. Despite her young age, the actress already has many prominent roles under her belt. Sethu has appeared in projects such as Star Wars: Andor, Jurassic World Dominion and Now You See Me 2.
Although it's not clear what prompted Millie Gibson's quick exit from the show, it's said that Doctor Who's showrunners are most excited about working with Varada Sethu. In particular, Russell T. Davies is said to be in awe of the iconic character's new companion.
'Varada is a real gem, Russell was just blown away by her talent. The cast and crew have really warmed to her and he's sure the fans will too,' The Mirror reports an unnamed insider's account.
Anyway, we will have to wait for the fourteenth installment starring Millie Gibson to see Sethu's performance. Season 14 is scheduled to drop in May.
