Did You Notice a Subtle Callback to Season 2 in Ted Lasso S03E09?
Fans were able to spot a curious callback in a recent episode.
Ted Lasso's narrative is so expertly crafted that even the most mundane detail can blossom into something significant in a later episode. In addition to every season beginning and ending with virtually the same close-up scene with different undertones, Ted Lasso is riddled with other callbacks, references, and important details, and there are in fact so many of them that they're almost impossible to keep track of.
In the recently released Episode 9, fans have managed to spot one huge callback, and it involves Roy Kent and Rebecca Welton.
While Roy and Rebecca are not particularly close, they sometimes have some pretty candid conversations with each other, discussing their careers and romantic relationships. One of the most memorable moments of the second season came courtesy of the two, when Roy quietly gave Rebecca a speech, telling her that she didn't have to waste time on men who clearly weren't into her, and thus helping her make up her mind. And it looks like Rebecca was waiting to return the favor in Season 3.
In Episode 9, Rebecca asked Roy to stop by her office, but the business talk Roy was expecting turned out to be much more personal. In the frank discussion, Rebecca called Roy out on his treatment of Keeley, forcing him to admit that she is the person in his life and that he should do something about it. While Roy is a grown man capable of deciding what's right for him, it seems that Rebecca has really helped him with some important decisions to come.
'Been waiting for Rebecca to properly meddle with Roy. He needed it and she's the only character strong enough to stand down the 'Great Roy Kent',' a fan pointed out.
It looks like even though this callback was pretty subtle, fans were able to get its meaning and salute the writers for making the whole scene look even more powerful with such an extended build-up.
We'll be keeping an eye on more references and callbacks in the future episodes of Ted Lasso, as fans are sure that the writers have a lot of surprises in store for them! The next episode of Ted Lasso will air on May 17, 2023.
