Did Season 5 Turn Denny Into the Creepiest Virgin River Character?
The melodrama grows increasingly bizarre.
It's safe to say that Virgin River is arguably the most popular melodrama in Netflix's extensive catalog. However, it's clear that the show's first season was superior to its latest few installments. Fortunately, the recently released initial part of Season 5 appears to have reversed this trend, offering fans fresh and thrilling romances, intriguing character development, and resolutions to long-standing enigmas.
Nevertheless, Season 5 did no favors for one specific character - Denny Cutler, who is supposed to be Vernon Mullins' grandson.
Denny first appeared in Season 3, surprising Doc and Hope with the revelation that an old flame of Doc's had given birth to his child, making Denny his grandson. This news shocked fans, and the surprise deepened when Doc agreed to let Denny live under his roof.
Oddball Character
From his initial appearance, fans detected a negative aura around Denny. Despite his assistance to Doc and Hope, he still came across as unsettling and dubious. Two seasons have elapsed since he arrived in Virgin River, but he continues to feel like an outsider. Season 5 has amplified this, with fans expecting to see the disclosure of Denny's true identity in the final two episodes of Season 5, scheduled for release on November 30.
'I keep feeling like we are supposed to feel something isn't right with him. I keep waiting for the big reveal. That he & his mom are lying. Or he's a thief. It just feels like we are waiting for something regarding him,' a fan said.
Mishandled Introduction
However, not all fans agree with this viewpoint. Some argue that it was Denny's introduction as an unknown grandson that initially painted him as a creepy character. They believe the writers have since neglected his character and are merely trying to integrate him into Virgin River.
'I think they just wanted to make his showing up such a massive mystery, almost as if they weren’t sure what they were going to do with him. Now as he seems like a legit character, he still is seen in how he was introduced,' another fan noted.
