Summary

  • The recent Star Wars sequel trilogy proved divisive with fans.
  • Daisy Ridley says that fans' feelings about the films have warmed up over the years.
  • The actress has confirmed that a fourth installment is in the works.

Given the popularity of franchises, rebooting them may seem like a surefire way for movie studios to make money. But there are always two sides to every coin. While popularity probably means success, it also means high audience expectations.

The Star Wars sequel trilogy is a prime example of this, with the series grossing a staggering $4.475 billion at the box office, while also upsetting many fans of the cosmic soap opera. Sure, the movies weren't exactly terrible, but they stirred up a lot of controversy within the SW fanbase and proved to be quite divisive.

Daisy Ridley on Her Experience with Fans' Backlash

The actress who portrayed Rey, the Last Jedi, in the Star Wars sequel trilogy had an unpleasant experience with the fan reception of the films. Remarkably, Daisy Ridley is still affected by the audience's reaction.

'It's still upsetting because you don't want people to feel like you've not served the thing they're a fan of. But Rian's one [The Last Jedi] was so divisive… It really felt like the first one was fairly [divisive] – everyone was responsive in a similar way. And then Rian's one [was] super divisive. And then, the last one [also was] super divisive,' the actress shared in a recent interview.

Over time, however, things have changed for the better, according to Ridley. Years after the release of The Rise of Skywalker, people would come up to her and ask if there would be more Star Wars movies with her in the lead. Although the actress was adamant that there wouldn't be, she recently confirmed the news of the fourth installment.

Daisy Ridley of the Fourth Star Wars Sequel Movie

'It is happening. I know the general story which is very cool,' the actress revealed in another interview. 'What's crazy is time passing. It was, like, eleven years ago when I got cast. I was a baby. So it's been quite a few years since I've been part of that world.'

Furthermore, it seems that Daisy Ridley is excited to return to her iconic role despite the fan backlash. But she admits it will be a different experience this time around.

'[It's cool to reprise the role] and also strange 'cause I was the baby, and now I'm like… I [have] got married and done other stuff. And I feel more like a grown up now. So, I'm looking forward to it,' Ridley added.

Unfortunately, no release date has been announced for the fourth installment.
