Deluca's Disastrous Departure is The Worst Exit on Grey's Anatomy Ever
Fans continue to grapple with the unexpected departure of a beloved character from the show.
Since its premiere on ABC in 2005, Grey's Anatomy has seen a slew of its main actors bid adieu. Some left to embark on new career paths, while others grew tired of portraying the same characters for years on end. This forces the writers to devise plausible exits for the characters, often involving transfers to different hospitals or states.
While fans have grown to appreciate this tactful approach to character departures, not all the doctors were accorded such graceful exits. A significant number were dramatically killed off, much to the fans' dismay.
Andrew Deluca has been a fan-favourite since his debut in the closing episodes of Season 11. Despite the writers initially sidelining the character, fans grew to respect him, both as a doctor and as a person.
So when Deluca was abruptly stabbed in Season 17 while rescuing children from a sex trafficking ring, fans were left reeling in disbelief. Many believe the decision to dispatch such a beloved character in such an abrupt and gory manner was a very bad move by the writers.
First of all, Deluca's death occurred during a crossover episode with another Shondaland production, Station 19. These crossover episodes are often seen as fillers, resulting in many fans missing out on witnessing the tragic end of their favourite character.
'I mean it was a crossover episode to another show for crying out loud. He was on Grey's for around 6 seasons but can't get a proper death episode?' a fan griped.
Second, fans struggle to comprehend why the Grey's Anatomy writers chose to kill off Deluca instead of sending him off to another hospital or even a different country. The writers can't have been attempting to shore up the show's ratings with yet another character death. However, fans are growing weary of the repeated use of this narrative device and are urging the writers to try something different when they need to get rid of a character.
'I would've preferred him leaving for Italy or somehow going to Switzerland to be with Bello. Anything would have been better, I feel like patients had sadder deaths than his,' another fan argued.
