Dave Filoni’s Star Wars Film Delayed: What the Epic Crossover With Skeleton Crew, The Mandalorian, and Ahsoka Could Have Looked Like
Fresh revelations about Dave Filoni’s highly anticipated Star Wars film are sending shockwaves through the galaxy, promising new twists and surprises for fans eager to return to a galaxy far, far away.
Alright, got a Star Wars update for folks who like to keep tabs on every twist in the galaxy. If you were hoping Dave Filoni was about to unite all his favorite space cowboys and Jedi students in a big Star Wars movie... well, you might want to park that hype for a while.
Filoni's Movie Is Taking a Nap
So here's the deal. Dave Filoni, who’s basically the keeper of the ‘Mando-verse’ (think: The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Boba Fett, etc.), was working on a movie where the good guys — and probably some morally ambiguous helmet-wearers — go up against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Sort of an Avengers-level crossover, but with more blasters and likely fewer capes.
But according to The Hollywood Reporter, that whole idea is on the back burner for now. Not dead, just... chilling in carbonite for a bit.
Who Was Supposed to Team Up?
- The Mandalorian and Grogu (aka Baby Yoda, because we all know that’s what you call him)
- Boba Fett's crew from The Book of Boba Fett
- Ahsoka Tano and whoever survives her series
- And — surprise! — the newcomers from the recent Skeleton Crew series, so Jude Law and the galaxy’s youngest troublemakers were apparently invited to the party too
All of these characters were reportedly set to face off against Thrawn, which, if you’ve watched Rebels — or even just seen Lars Mikkelsen with blue face paint — you know means ‘big trouble’ in Star Wars terms.
The Official Filoni Status Check
This crossover flick was first mentioned at Star Wars Celebration 2023, and it was supposed to bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. So, post-Empire, pre-Rey and Finn — right in that messy period where all the cool weirdos are at large.
Filoni himself sounded pretty jazzed earlier this year, saying:
"Because I've been writing [Ahsoka season 2], things have clicked, and I have a much better idea about where things are going to go... I will say, I have an opening I really like quite a bit, I'm very excited about it for that picture. I'm excited about the potential of just doing it."
Translation: He’s got a killer way to start the movie, but, well, Lucasfilm’s got other priorities at the moment.
Who’s Running Lucasfilm These Days?
If you haven’t been keeping up with the corporate shuffle, there’s been a big shakeup. Filoni, who used to be chief creative officer, just got promoted to co-president. He’s sharing the job with Lynwen Brennan. This is a big deal because Kathleen Kennedy, who’s run the place ever since Disney bought Star Wars in 2012, is stepping aside after a solid 14-year tenure.
So... What’s Actually Coming to Theaters?
Since Filoni’s epic team-up isn’t next, here’s the real Star Wars release roadmap for people who measure time in lightsaber appearances:
The Mandalorian and Grogu hits theaters first on May 22, with Jon Favreau directing. This is the first time we’ll see everyone’s favorite green meme machine on the big screen.
Star Wars: Starfighter lands May 28, 2027. This one’s not tied to previous stories — it’s fresh faces and fresh drama, with Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, and Mia Goth all on board.
If you want the complete rundown on every new Star Wars movie and show in the pipeline, seriously, set aside an afternoon — there’s a whole galaxy’s worth coming.
