Game of Thrones creator has faith in the Native American series.

It's never easy following in anyone's shadow. Therefore, when Dark Winds premiered last summer not many people were expecting big things. For starters, the show was arriving on the heels of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad - the two unquestionably most successful TV series in AMC history.

Accordingly, Dark Winds was facing a tall order. Despite it, the first season managed to garner steady viewership thanks partly to being produced by some of the biggest names in Hollywood, including Robert Redford and George R.R. Martin.

Now, following the success of season one, it's been confirmed that Dark Winds is returning for season two. Here are the few details we know thus far about the second installment:

George R.R. Martin's position

There were few that suspected George R.R. Martin would throw his faith behind a western TV series told from the perspective of tribal police on the Navajo reservation yet that is precisely what Martin did after leaving Game of Thrones.

The brainchild of GOT continues to support the TV series as he recently shared updates regarding season two of Dark Winds. According to Martin, the AMC series is not only confirmed for a second season but has nearly wrapped up production. For this reason, Martin anticipates new episodes returning this summer.

WGA strike causing delays in TV productions

Unfortunately, there is no end in sight for the current writer's strike in Hollywood. Consequently, several upcoming TV series may suffer from work delays, leaving fans in limbo. However, the same fate is not coming for Dark Winds season two which has already completed shooting scenes and is now in post-production.

Therefore, the current WGA strike will have little effect on Dark Winds season two since all the episodes have already been created and are now simply going through the editing phase. Even better, this shouldn't deter the upcoming summer 2023 release, according to Martin. 'Wrapped [shooting Dark Winds] several months ago,' the author explained in the blog, 'and will soon be done with the last [episode].'

Dark Winds Season 2 poised for more viewership, fanfare

The timing of the release for season two may be exactly what Dark Winds needs to get a boost in a year that has had a number of gigantic letdowns. Now, with the WGA strike looming, Dark Winds may be one of the few new offerings this summer.

And with Joe Leaphorn and Chee returning to fight the bad people and evil spirits of the Navajo land, we'll be interested to see where Martin and the producers take things in the second season. Nevertheless, the sky's the limit and that is exciting for fans of Dark Winds.
