Cringe-fest: 7 K-Dramas So Bad, You'd Be Embarrassed Just By Watching It
It's fair to say that K-drama has come out of nowhere to take its place at the top table of television.
From dystopian sci-fi The Silent Sea to comedies like Crash Course in Romance and, of course, Squid Game, viewers have quickly grown to love South Korean dramas.
But not all of them are up to the same standard. In fact, K-drama also has its fair share of cringe-worthy shows.
Here are 7 of the worst series that you need to avoid like the plague, unless you love that "so bad it's almost good" feeling:
Part-Time Idol
A music producer puts together a new band after a hiatus. Sounds dull, right? Unfortunately, that's not the only problem with this show. The acting is laughably terrible, the sets are horrific, and the writing is about as bad as the premise. But there are a few tunes you'll just love!
Boys Over Flowers
A working-class girl is sent to a prestigious high school after she saves a boys' life and gets embroiled in the lives of wealthy bullies. If you love a cliché, this show is for you. If you like a decent storyline and good-quality writing and acting, it's not.
Cinderella and the Four Knights
When the young girl moves in to work as a maid in a wealthy old man's mansion, she enters a love quadrangle. On, and she also has a cruel stepmother. This K-drama is as bad and childish as the title suggests. It also has a main character you just can't like. Pretty good soundtrack, though.
The K2
A fugitive seeking revenge for the death of his lover takes on a bodyguard role to get access to his target. It's hard to know quite how they went from such a strong pilot to such a weak plot. The show takes itself too seriously but massively fails to deliver on its initial promise.
Heartstrings
A coming-of-age drama set in a performing arts school. From the title of the show right through the plotline and characters, everything about this is cringey and cliché. Not to mention the complete lack of chemistry between the actors. Do yourself a favor and give this show a wide berth.
Nail Shop Paris
A disgraced female writer dresses as a boy to follow a man she has identified as the lead character in her next book. This is one of those shows where you can't quite work out if it's a parody or not – and then you realize that, even if it is, it's a terrible parody and not worth watching.
Playful Kiss
An unpopular teenage girl (and her dad) unexpectedly ends up living with the uber-popular boy she fancies (and his mum) in a comedy that was absolutely bombed in South Korea. Which doesn't really explain why it was then sold to 12 other countries. It does nothing to promote how good K-Drama can be.
