Costner is Done With Yellowstone, but Season 6 Still on the Cards Without Him?
The iconic show might not be as dead as expected.
Taylor Sheridan's initial venture into television proved a massive hit. His now-iconic cowboy show, Yellowstone, features Kevin Costner as the head of a Montana ranching family. It remains one of the most-watched projects on television, with only the Super Bowl surpassing it in ratings. However, the behind-the-scenes drama between Sheridan and Costner escalated earlier this year, potentially spelling the successful project's end.
The crux of the matter is that Sheridan and Costner had conflicting visions for the development of the show's main character, John Dutton. Out of spite, Costner chose to disrupt the entire production. Fans have been waiting for the second half of Season 5 for almost a year now, and with the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it's highly doubtful that the show will resume this year.
Bleak Prospects
Paramount+ and Sheridan have officially confirmed that Yellowstone will conclude with the second half of Season 5, hinting at the death of Costner's character. Fans are concerned they may not see their favorite characters again. But is this accurate?
Unfortunately, only Sheridan knows the specifics, but it has been revealed that the Yellowstone saga will carry on with a brand-new show starring none other than Matthew McConaughey. The plot of the new untitled series is still unknown, but some fans are confident that it will essentially serve as Yellowstone Season 6, albeit without Costner.
The theory makes a lot of sense, seeing how many of the original Yellowstone actors have expressed interest in reprising their roles in the future. Sheridan could simply rename the show and continue the main storyline with the new lead, which would undoubtedly infuriate Costner, as for all intents and purposes, it would serve as the sixth season of Yellowstone.
In any case, we will have to wait until the final batch of Season 5 episodes is released to know anything for certain. One thing is clear, though: the name Yellowstone will be discontinued after Season 5.
