Can We Talk About How Tom Cruise's Staying Power Lies in His Underwear?
The actor has a peculiar token of power.
However unwilling we may be to admit it, everyone believes in at least some superstitions, at least some of the time. To paraphrase The Office's Michael Scott, few of us are superstitious, but all of us are at least a little stitious. Some of us will feel reluctant to go back somewhere we just left to fetch something we forgot. Others will hesitate to kill a spider as they believe it can bring bad luck. Our superstitions are legion.
Remarkably, the rich and famous are not immune to this human affliction. Even the most prominent movie stars observe certain rituals in the fervent hope that they will bring luck. For instance, Tom Cruise is notorious for his eccentric behaviour on set.
The actor has become a household name after starring in numerous blockbusters. He made his debut in the 1981 film Endless Love, where he played one of the main character's friends named Billy. (If we've piqued your interest, a fair warning is in order: you can't unsee the shorts Cruise wears in it!).
Then came Top Gun and the Mission: Impossible franchise, which collectively grossed billions at the box office, cementing Tom Cruise as the quintessential action hero in Hollywood. This title is well-deserved, as Cruise continues to perform all his stunts at sixty-one. If you've seen a Mission: Impossible movie, you can't help but be impressed by the actor's physical prowess.
Naturally, many people wonder what gives him the courage to perform these stunts. The answer may well boggle your mind.
Tom Cruise relies on thongs to calm his nerves before shooting action sequences. The actor reportedly demands that nearly fifty pairs of this type of underwear be delivered to the set. The logic behind this is that the garment's snug fit keeps everything in place, improves the wearer's agility, and allows him to carry on filming with minimal interruptions.
Now if you can't handle Tom Cruise in shorts in Endless Love at 19, you probably shouldn't try and imagine him in thongs at age 61. But then again, to each their own.
As for Tom Cruise's impressive stunts, you can see them when Mission: Impossible seven opens in theatres on 12 July.
