Hallmark is marketing Providence Falls as a "three-part event," but the rollout has left plenty of viewers wondering whether they're tuning in for one movie, a mini-series, or a full trilogy.

The network launched the saga on August 2 with Providence Falls: Chance of a Lifetime, the first of three consecutive Saturday premieres. Each entry is feature-length, branded as its own film, yet designed to run as one continuous story.

Release schedule:

  • Part 1: Chance of a Lifetime — August 2, 8/7c
  • Part 2: An Impossible Promise — August 9, 8/7c
  • Part 3: Thief of Fate — August 16, 8/7c

What it's about

The series follows Cora (Katie Stevens), a newly appointed police detective partnered with visiting officer Liam (Lachlan Quarmby). Unbeknownst to her, Liam is actually her reincarnated lover, sent back in another life to alter her fate. Evan Roderick co-stars as Finn, forming the third side of the central love triangle.

On IMDb, the story traces even further back: in 1844 Ireland, Liam was a thief who fell for aristocrat Cora. Their forbidden romance disrupted destiny, leading to his return centuries later in present-day Oregon — this time as her partner on the force, with the angels watching closely.

Fans weigh in

The project adapts Jude Deveraux's popular trilogy, and longtime readers immediately recognized the scope. One fan wrote after the premiere,

"I have read the trilogy of books by Jude Devereux that this series is based on. I really enjoyed part one of this trilogy. Liam and Cora have great chemistry. Finn's character is well-acted and makes for a believable piece of the love triangle."

The adaptation takes some liberties with tone.

"In the books, the bits with the angels were more drawn out and seemed a bit more punishing toward Liam. In the movie, they're portrayed as bureaucratic agents of destiny and have a more supporting role."

Another reaction praised Hallmark for pushing past its typical boundaries:

"I am thrilled for Hallmark to finally make a PG rated movie. We can see some sensuality and innuendo from some of the characters. It feels more realistic to how adults actually act in the real world versus utopia."
