The controversial pairing may not be as bad as you think.

There's no denying that Virgin River has experienced a significant drop in quality since its impressive first season premiered on Netflix in 2019. The story of LA nurse Mel relocating to the tranquil eponymous town had to evolve and introduce new elements to make sure fans kept coming back for more. However, instead of doubling down on the show's cozy, feel-good vibe, the writers opted to infuse excessive drama into the narrative, effectively turning it into a soap opera.

Nonetheless, the recently released Season 5 managed to somewhat rectify the situation by shifting the focus more onto romance rather than the criminal activities of some residents, as seen in previous seasons. Despite this, fans found issues to complain about.

Controversial Pairing

While the primary romantic narrative of Mel and Jack improved significantly in Season 5, fans criticized the writers for their portrayal of romance between supporting characters, citing Cameron and Muriel as a prime example.

For some reason, fans disapproved of Muriel dating a man 15 years her junior, describing their romance as clichéd, unconvincing, and downright bad. However, this pairing should be given a fair chance, and here's why.

Why Cameron and Muriel Work as a Couple

First, it's undeniable that the chemistry between the two is quite compelling. Every scene with them at its core practically overflows with energy and excitement, a quality not many couples on the show can claim.

Additionally, this storyline effectively demonstrates that finding love later in life is not only possible but can also be transformative, as evidenced by Muriel's complete life turnaround after meeting Cameron.

Furthermore, the way the two characters initially resisted their feelings to avoid upsetting those around them, only to throw all caution to the wind after their first kiss, was genuinely heartwarming. It suggests that Cameron and Muriel could potentially become the best couple on Virgin River in future seasons. They just need a chance.
