The writers made a huge mistake with the beloved character.

CBS' Blue Bloods has been one of the most popular primetime crime dramas for more than a decade for a reason: fans loved the dynamics between the members of the Reagan family because their relationships always felt real and compelling.

While it is obviously difficult to maintain great cast chemistry over such a long period of time, the Blue Blood writers and cast managed to do just that, but with one notable exception. Erin Reagan and Jack Boyle's daughter Nicky, played by Sami Gayle, unfortunately failed to live up to the series' high standards.

Early on, Gayle's character was one of the most beloved on Blue Bloods, as the actress really nailed the role of the troubled teenager. Nicky was constantly involved in various storylines, and viewers loved that she was able to add something extra to even the most mundane scenes. However, all of that began to change in the later seasons of the show.

A change for the worse

Although Nicky was already a popular character, the writers decided to tweak her personality to better fit the modern standards of television. Needless to say, fans hated the change.

'I think they tried to make her the "young, liberal, college student, privileged but still feels like a victim, I will change the world by giving speeches" stereotype,' an annoyed fan wrote.

While it's commendable that the writers tried to make Nicky relevant, as she previously felt more like a supporting character even in her greatest moments, they have sadly butchered the execution, turning the beloved side character into an annoying brat.

Apparently, the writers felt that Nicky was simply unfixable, so they decided to let her go before Season 14. And most fans actually support the decision, even though the writers themselves are to blame for turning Nicky into a hated person.
