American Idol Turned Into a Popularity Contest (But It's Actually Okay)
Many fans believe American Idol is straying further and further from its original ethos.
Despite American Idol's Season 21 introduction of the beloved vocalist, Iam Tongi, who appears steadfast in his pursuit of victory, fans have expressed some disappointment with the current season. They contend that the show, initially intended to discover and help talent, has shifted its focus towards promoting personal brands over skills.
During the initial seasons of this reality singing competition, viewers were confident that the winner of the American Idol title was the most gifted contestant, as millions nationwide cast their votes based on talent, not personal appeal.
Critics argue that American Idol's new and improved format has rearranged the show’s competition more along the lines of personal brand promotion as opposed to having contestants compete primarily on singing talent.
In past seasons, contestants would face elimination a week after their performances rather than at an episode's conclusion. This schedule allowed audiences more time to reflect on the performances before casting their votes. Now, however, they are compelled to make swift decisions, which means they often get swayed by the performers' charisma and magnetism rather than pure talent.
‘Remember when they would perform and then get voted off on the next episode and voting wouldn’t start until the end of the show… so it would be fair to every contestant. So now you just vote on who you like. If they butchered the song or not, they got the vote because you liked them,’ a fan lamented.
Although this sentiment is understandable, some fans argue that American Idol's current trajectory has always been its path, citing instances of more captivating, albeit less skilled, performers outshining their more talented counterparts.
‘A person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. The definition of idol. It's always been a popularity contest,’ another fan argued.
Indeed, American Idol has never been solely about singing talent. The producers aim to cultivate superstars, not just professional performers. As we know, not every superstar is the most talented in their field, and American Idol effectively embodies this concept.
American Idol Season 21 Episode 20 will arrive on ABC on 21 May 2023.
