American Idol Fans Outraged After Katy Perry Picks Oliver Over Tyson
The pop star seems to have stirred up yet another controversy this season.
Season 21 of American Idol is undeniably one of the most talked-about seasons in the recent history of reality singing competitions, with controversies breaking out in every episode, starting with Katy Perry's mom-shaming comments and ending with the recent Top 12 picks, where talented performers were eliminated while Nutsa remained, despite her subpar showings.
American Idol seems determined to provoke fans, seeing how the picks for the final eight have left many people puzzled and questioning the integrity of the whole process.
While fan-favourite contestants like Iam Tongi, We Ani, and Megan Danielle all made it to the finals, people were shocked to discover that both Haven Madison and Oliver Steele also got picked for the Top 8, despite their evident stagnation and lack of inspiration throughout the season. Even worse, Oliver was saved by Katy Perry, who chose to rescue him over Tyson Venegas, one of the most talented singers of Season 21. Fans are not ok with the move.
‘First, 2 bad wildcard picks (given talent left on the floor). And now Oliver? The dude who has not pushed himself once during the entire competition? You need new judges. Way to ruin the evening,’ one fan wrote.
However, it seems the judges may not be entirely to blame, as Tyson also failed to win a voting process, with many more viewers choosing to support Haven instead. Some fans argue that Tyson's loss was predetermined by his heritage and American Idol's voting rules.
‘I'm sorry, but why do you take Canadian contestants when Canadians can't vote? Seems pretty clear to me Americans are going to vote for Americans,’ one fan noted.
Regardless, Oliver is now in the Top 8, and Tyson is not, and most American Idol fans accept this outcome, arguing that neither of them has ever had a chance to win the American Idol title because Iam and We are just too powerful to be stopped. Therefore, hating Perry for choosing Oliver over Tyson may be somewhat unfair. It remains unlikely that Oliver will survive the next round.
