7 Craziest Riverdale Storylines, Ranked By How Nutty They Are
Riverdale can rightfully be called one of the weirdest shows ever.
It gained notoriety for its plethora of downright bizarre plot twists, blending a myriad of genres, from detective and occult horror to even rom-com, as well as incorporating various tropes and a great deal of meta-references to pop culture.
Today, 23 August, the series will be airing its season finale. Before we bid farewell to the beloved residents of Riverdale, let's revisit the most ridiculously odd storylines:
7. The Tickle Circle
What immediately springs to mind is a Season 4 story arc involving Kevin Keller and his then-boyfriend Fangs Fogarty. Faced with financial troubles, Kevin starts recording and selling 'tickle' videos. It was a completely unexpected and inappropriate storyline, seeing how both characters are minors.
6. Bear Fight
One of the wildest moments came in Season 3. After escaping an underground prison fight club, Archie takes refuge in the Canadian wilderness. However, he soon finds himself attacked by a grizzly bear, an encounter he escapes practically unscathed from.
5. The Mothmen
It's no shock that the show dabbled in cryptids. Season 5 delved into the folkloric legend of the mysterious humanoid creature, the Mothman. It later transpired that the creature wasn't singular but plural, and they weren't extraterrestrials, as conspiracy theorists believed. Instead, they were the inbred descendants of the Blossom family. Wild!
4. The local D&D variant
Hollywood seems to have an odd fascination with D&D. Do the creators harbour a fear of nerds?
In Season 3, Riverdale residents are captivated by a local D&D analogue called Gryphons & Gargoyles. However, the consequences of dice rolls aren't just wins or losses but ritual suicides orchestrated by the entity known as the Gargoyle King.
3. Charles and Chic
Chic was supposedly the long-lost son of Alice Cooper and FP Jones. Yet, he's later revealed to be an impostor, a serial killer masquerading as Alice's genuine son Charles. The plot thickens when it's uncovered that Chic and Charles, the real one, were not only lovers but also partners in crime.
2. Riverdale superheroes
After Archie's altercation with the bear, almost anything seemed possible. But the show reached the zenith of lunacy when, upon returning from the alternate reality of Rivervale in Season 6, the group finds they've acquired superpowers. Young adult superhero drama was the last thing we anticipated!
1. 50s arc
Tabitha's decision to transport Riverdale to the 1950s ranks as the oddest plot twist. It wasn't necessarily a misstep, as the ambience echoed the original comics. However, this move undermined many previous storylines. Yet, after the tumult in the main timeline, it felt like a much-needed, albeit trippy, breath of fresh air.
