Vampires and werewolves may not exist, but unfortunately for TVD fans, these storylines do too.

In a campy teen drama about vampires and eternal love, there are bound to be cringe-worthy plotlines, and these are the worst of them all.

1. The love triangle

At first, we were enthralled by the steamy love triangle between Elena, Damon and Stefan, and the fandom was divided between the two ships and the two vampire brothers, but after a while, it became more boring, and less intense, and it turned out to be rather awkward to watch two brothers fighting over a girl.

Looking back, the whole storyline was massively clichéd, but at the time it was a huge drawing point for the show.

2. Finding out about the Sire Bond

We waited so long to finally see Damon and Elena together, but their steamy romance was tainted by a plot twist that left many feeling queasy. It was revealed that Elena had become sired to Damon after she died with his blood in her system, and the supernatural bond caused her to do everything in her power to please him.

Finding out that Elena was sired to Damon raised a rather uncomfortable debate about consent, considering she had slept with him whilst under the sire bond, and besides that, the storyline gave us an unforgettably cringe-inducing moment between them that goes; 'Then stop loving me.' … 'I can't!'

3. The Cure

This concept completely erased the serious and eternal consequences of becoming a vampire, by introducing the Cure, which could magically turn a vampire back into a human and make everything okay.

Besides the countless plot holes and distorted rules surrounding the Cure, the plot itself rendered the threat of becoming a vampire useless and was hard to take seriously. It felt like lazy writing, and TVD fans are still upset and embarrassed by it.

4.Katherine ruling Hell

Introducing the existence of Heaven and Hell into the story was dramatic enough, but having Katherine rule it was the cringeworthy cherry on top.

Katherine was the go-to villain of the series, but this storyline about Katherine as the Queen of Hell was poorly executed and fans even called it 'goofy.' For bonus points, let's not forget the line involved with Katherine pretending to be Elena that goes; 'The myth, the legend, the baddest bitch of all, Katherine.'

5. The Sirens

The Sirens, and the threat of Hell just fell embarrassingly short of what the storyline was intended to be. Sybil, the cannibalistic Siren, was introduced in season 7, but after vampires, werewolves, witches and more, it all just felt like too much, and became ridiculous. The whole plot felt even more pointless after how easily Cade destroyed Sybil and Seline.
