When Modern Family fans watched Andy say goodbye to Haley, it felt like a gut punch.

Their chemistry was off the charts, their storyline was shaping up to be something special — and then it just ended. No closure, no resolution, just… Utah.

So what actually happened?

Adam DeVine, who played Andy Bailey, finally cleared things up on Whitney Cummings' podcast Good for You. And yes — Andy really was supposed to marry Haley. But according to DeVine, he had to walk away due to a scheduling conflict. Fans had long suspected this, and now it's confirmed straight from the source.

"They wanted to bring me back towards the end of the show," DeVine said in a 2024 tweet, "but I was already shooting another project. Hollywood baby!!! Sarah [Hyland] rules. The show ruled and I loved being a part of it."

That other project? Most likely The Righteous Gemstones, HBO's hit comedy series where DeVine stars as Kelvin Gemstone. But at the time he left Modern Family, he was also juggling Pitch Perfect 2 and the now-infamous Jexi.

One commenter summed it up bluntly:

"Realizing he left to do that movie, when he could have stayed and Andy and Haley would have married, infuriates me."

Others were just heartbroken:

"She told him he was the first man she really loved… and then she gets pregnant and ends up with Dylan? Salt. In. The. Wound."

DeVine did return for a brief cameo in Season 9, showing up as Haley's emergency contact when she's in the hospital. But that was it. The showrunners wanted him back near the finale — but it didn't happen.

Which led to one of Modern Family's biggest what-ifs: Haley and Andy never got their ending. Instead, Haley ends up with Dylan — her goofy, off-and-on high school boyfriend who, while lovable in his own right, was never built for long-term depth. Even fans who liked Dylan admitted he felt more like a "romantic safety net."

"Dylan was always there after other breakups. Like Claire, I never wanted them to end up together."

Fans weren't just invested in the relationship — they saw Andy as a catalyst for Haley's growth. During their time together, she was evolving: less of the party girl, more ambitious, more grounded. Once he left, that development stalled.

"She was literally robbed," one fan wrote. "Her arc turned into Claire's backstory but with Dylan and no career."

Ironically, Adam DeVine and Sarah Hyland did reunite in 2022's Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin, where they once again played love interests. It was short-lived — the series was canceled after one season due to the 2023 strikes — but it gave fans a small glimpse of the pairing that never got its due.

And while a Modern Family reboot isn't on the horizon (yet), there's a clear consensus: if Andy had stuck around, Haley's story might have looked very different — and a lot of fans would've cried a lot less at 1 a.m.
