10 TV Shows Redditors Have Given Up On in 2023
The bad news is we are less than halfway through the year and fans have already given up on a plethora of highly anticipated, yet remarkably disappointing 2023 TV releases.
From Ted Lasso to Animal Control, Rings of Power and Mandarolian - the year thus far has been a major letdown regarding new releases.
It’s a sentiment shared by Redditors, who were quick to offer their opinion regarding the biggest disappointments of 2023 on TV. Some of the selections just may surprise you:
#1 Animal Control
Animal Control was the type of show that was riding firmly on the curtail of its predecessor - Community. Yes, Joel McHale is generally funny enough to save just about any script. Unfortunately, Redditors agree that Animal Control has been a huge disappointment.
#2 The Winchesters
Speaking of first-season disasters, The Winchesters ranks among the biggest disappointments of 2023. Sadly, the dark fantasy drama has not translated with viewers, who are struggling to endure a lackluster first season.
The Winchesters is a spin-off to the popular show Supernatural, which ended a 15-year run in 2020. The hope was that The Winchesters would revive some of that magic but, sadly, all it has done is turn viewers off suggesting it will not reach the 300+ episodes as was the case with its predecessor.
#3 Great British Bake Off
Okay, some may argue how can one possibly get mad at a show about food? Well, in an era of numerous TV shows about cooking, it has become feasible that some programs simply do not cut it. Great British Bake Off, now in its last season (13th series), has become mundane according to Redditors.
The baking contestant show always manages to offer up some fresh inventions, but it has merely worn off its appeal. It may be trivial, but such is the cooking world where the shelf life is nearly as short as the food presented on it.
#4 The Blacklist
The Blacklist is another show that has arguably overstayed its welcome. Redditors acknowledge that the story has become “tiresome” after season five. The American crime thriller is currently enduring its final season, a remarkable tenth in the business.
Nonetheless, The Blacklist, initially an inviting premise with plenty of action, has suffered the fate of many shows. It has ran out of ideas. Fans agree and are ready to see the bleeding end with the culmination of season 10.
#5 Ted Lasso
Perhaps the most controversial selection on the list, numerous Redditors commented that season three of Ted Lasso has been a tremendous letdown. It will arguably unsettle some of the more devoted fans of the AppleTV+ hit comedy, but that’s just fair criticism.
It appears that Ted Lasso was an unstoppable force over the course of its first two seasons. Yet, sadly, like many shows that rise to popularity early on, are also prone to burning out quickly. Thus, Redditors acknowledge that Ted Lasso isn’t the same in season three, where the laughs are sporadic and characters have become predictable.
#6 The Handmaid’s Tale
The Handmaid’s Tale, a futuristic dystopian society, based on a novel by Margaret Atwood, debuted to much excitement. For starters, the cast (including Elisabeth Moss) got a lot of fans thrilled about the premiere.
Fast forward five seasons later and the sentiment is no longer the same among audiences. Redditors were unanimous in their opinion that the current season of The Handmaid’s Tale has been exhausting. What’s more, those loyal to the show will still have to endure another season, as the show is destined to conclude in 2024-25.
#7 The Flight Attendant
The Flight Attendant, another recent TV show based on a novel, got a lot of fans engines revved when it debuted in 2020 on HBO Max. The dark comedy had many enticing ingredients to offer to viewers, blending dark comedy into a mystery thriller.
Furthermore, it didn’t hurt for Big Bang Theory nerds that The Flight Attendant marked the return of Kaley Cuoco to a TV show. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t lived up to the hype. HBO rarely messes anything up regarding their content, but this show reeks of something that will not survive another season or two.
#8 The Mandalorian
Disney has the capability to funnel Star Wars content for the next several decades. Whether or not they should, is an entirely different debate. Nonetheless, most viewers agree that The Mandalorian (Disney+) - a Star Wars spin-off by Jon Favreau - has become ho-hum by season three.
The TV show got a lot of buzz early on, particularly because it’s the first Star Wars live-action release and has been in development since 2009. Nevertheless, the most recent season has felt predictable and boring. What a shame.
#9 The Rings of Power
Amazon has the power and influence to buy anything, including the exclusive rights to The Lord of the Rings, much like Disney did with Star Wars. Notwithstanding, money cannot buy everything and it has been evident on Rings of Power.
Sure, the most expensive TV show ever produced continues to wow audiences from a visual standpoint, yet most Redditors confer that Rings of Power isn’t quite what they expected. As most agree, RoP hasn’t been terrible - it’s just been ordinary.
#10 Yellowstone
Ah, poor Yellowstone. First, the neo-western struggled to maintain the interest of audiences as season five dragged along - and that was only the first half of the season. Then Kevin Costner (perhaps witnessing the disaster unfolding) has given every indication that he's not even willing to finish shooting the rest of season five.
If that is not a handful for showrunner Taylor Sheridan, we don’t know what else can make Yellowstone transform into more of a shipwreck at this point. It’s best for Sheridan to abandon it, just like Costner and everyone else on board.
