Man of Steel director Zack Snyder weighs in on James Gunn’s Superman with a candid take set to stir DC fandom, as the architect of the DCEU reflects on the next era he helped launch.

Zack Snyder just weighed in on James Gunn's Superman, and if you were hoping for a director grudge match, sorry — it is not that kind of story. He was gracious, even excited, and pretty clear about where his old DC run sits now.

Where Snyder's DC era left off — and what the new one looks like

Snyder kicked off Warner Bros.' modern DC push with 2013's Man of Steel, then doubled down with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. His 2017 Justice League spiraled through a famously messy post-production that eventually led to the release of Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. The DCEU closed shop in 2023 with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Since then, James Gunn and Peter Safran have hit reset with a fresh DCU at DC Studios.

Snyder on Gunn's take: supportive, not territorial

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Snyder shut down any idea of bad blood. He framed his three-film DC arc as something that still has a life with fans, but separate from what Gunn is building now. He also sounded genuinely eager to see the new movie.

'I wish them all the best... it is what it is... I can't wait to see the next movie. It's just awesome.'

He gave Gunn a full-throated compliment for how he blends tone and mythology — a pretty notable tip of the hat considering how different their sensibilities are.

'James is singular in his storytelling... an iconic and very particular point of view that's both poignant and funny... He's a great steward of that world.'

Fans may bicker, the filmmakers do not

Yes, the online camps love to clash, but the guys actually making these movies keep saying the same thing: mutual respect. Snyder reiterated that here, and it did not sound like lip service.

If you want a refresher, Man of Steel is streaming on Max, and a batch of Superman titles is there too.
