Young Sheldon Will Use TBBT Storyline in Season 6 Two-Part Finale

When TV shows spawn sequels and prequels, everyone expects them to remain faithful to the original's plotlines. However, discrepancies and deviations are inevitable most of the time, often leading to fans' disapproval. But when the original plot is followed to a tee, there is excitement in the air as fans get curious about the spinoff's take on it.

This may be the case for Young Sheldon. Premiering in 2017 as a spinoff of the immensely popular The Big Bang Theory, it co-existed with its parent show for two years. YS delves into the childhood of TBBT's most eccentric character, Sheldon Cooper, and his family.

Though quite different from the original, the spinoff has enjoyed significant success. There has been room for criticism, too, as the prequel's writers sometimes seemed to disregard the original show's canon and the facts about Sheldon's life that his grown-up version shared with the other TBBT characters. Nevertheless, the grand one-hour finale of Young Sheldon's sixth season appears to pay homage to the titular character's childhood memories in the original show.

In the two-part finale set to air on CBS on 18 May, perhaps the most exciting event should occur. Sheldon and his mother, Mary, are heading to Germany for the summer while the rest of the Cooper family braces for a tornado approaching Medford. For those who may not understand the significance of this development, it should be noted that Young Sheldon is adhering to the original plotline established in The Big Bang Theory.

In episode 11 of TBBT's first season, a sick Sheldon reminisces about the summer he spent in Germany as a visiting professor and fell ill. His mother, who initially accompanied him, had to return to Texas to help his dad with the house after a tornado.

Despite the terrible event, it highlights that the spinoff's writers genuinely pay attention to the plot details that many fans hold dear. In fact, there has been much debate surrounding the conclusion of Young Sheldon's sixth season, as it is high time for more family drama for the Coopers, according to the adult Sheldon. Regardless, the prequel has at least one more season to follow up on all the storylines we've learned from TBBT.

Young Sheldon’s next episode, Little Green Men and a Fella’s Marriage Proposal, premieres on CBS on 27 April 2023. The two-part finale will be broadcast on 18 May 2023.
