Young Sheldon's Season 6 Finale Left George & Mary Fallout Unresolved
It looks like the writers didn't bother to address the Coopers' marriage problems.
Ever since Young Sheldon was announced in 2016, fans of The Big Bang Theory have been dreading to see the scene where Sheldon will catch his father George cheating on Mary with another woman. For every fan familiar with the timeline, it was clear that this horrible scene should come up in Season 6.
However, much to everyone's surprise, the sixth season just ended, and the tragic incident never became a reality in Young Sheldon.
While it's great that the writers decided to deviate from the canon and prevent George from cheating on Mary, people argue that the whole season led up to something bad happening, only to turn it around at the very end.
At one point in the season, Mary was really upset that George was flirting with Brenda and even went away with her mother just to avoid him. That whole situation seemed to provide the perfect build-up to the cheating scandal, but it was forgotten in an instant and never really addressed by the writers later in the show.
'Suddenly George and Mary were just completely back to normal as if nothing had happened before. I get that they probably wanted to have a united front when punishing her but even after that, it just went completely unaddressed which didn't seem realistic at all,' one fan said.
Apparently, Young Sheldon creators decided that painting the picture of a happy family is much more important than keeping the story engaging and true to the source material, but that also ruined the immersion for many fans. On the other hand, some viewers supported the writers' decision, arguing that Mary and George's sudden reconciliation was realistic enough because their marriage had always been dysfunctional and dependent on their children.
'Once they had to deal with Missy running away, Mary came back home and they have seemingly just brushed all of their problems under the rug again,' a fan explained. 'That's how their marriage works.'
Perhaps the problems of George and Mary's marriage will be further explored in the upcoming seventh season of Young Sheldon, which debuts this fall.
