Apparently, he's the only one-dimensional character on the show.

Since its release in 2017, Young Sheldon has been the best family show around. Remarkably, this spin-off comes from CBS' hit, if controversial, sitcom The Big Bang Theory, which follows a group of California scientists in their daily lives. YS, in turn, is nothing like its parent show. It's much more fun, hilarious, and satisfying story-wise, as it depicts a host of multifaceted, complex characters.

Although Young Sheldon is primarily a comedy, it has certain compelling dramatic qualities that make us invested in the Cooper family's story. In this sense, the TBBT spin-off lacks caricatural characters, meaning that even the off-putting ones get some development and endear themselves to the audience.

Take, for example, Brenda Sparks, who is portrayed as a cranky neighbor in earlier seasons, but becomes Mary's and eventually George's best friend. However, there is one character who doesn't have a single appealing trait.

Complacent Pastor

Since Young Sheldon is a spin-off of The Big Bang Theory and revolves around the titular character, Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the audience has preconceived notions about his attitude toward religion. In this light, it's not surprising that Sheldon's childhood pastor is portrayed as an annoying, ignorant man who is full of himself. Moreover, Pastor Jeff is portrayed as a meek and cowardly hypocrite, which doesn't win him any fans.

Young Sheldon's Mistake

At the same time, it is not only unfair to the character in question, it undermines the integrity of the entire show. Young Sheldon has been a top-quality series, meticulously written and superbly acted, since its first episode. Mary's overbearing love for Sheldon, George's grumpiness, or Meemaw's sarcasm - these qualities blended with others in their respective characters to create complicated personalities that viewers fell in love with. But in Pastor Jeff's case, there was no such thing.

By the end of Season 6, the man remained an irritating caricature of a character more suited for The Big Bang Theory with its corny laugh track than for its spinoff. In other words, by neglecting Pastor Jeff's development, Young Sheldon missed a great opportunity to create another interesting and compelling character.
