A DIY laundry gel outwashes leading brands at a tenth of the price.

Premium detergents love a premium price tag, and the cheaper stuff often leaves skin itchy and fabrics poorly rinsed. Here is the fix: a simple homemade laundry gel that cleans like a champ, clocks in at roughly ten times cheaper, and takes about 30 minutes to make. You control the ingredients, so it stays gentle, hypoallergenic, and a little kinder to the planet.

Why this formula earns a spot in your laundry routine

It keeps costs low. Compared with store-bought powders and gels, the price per load drops to pocket change. The ingredient list stays short and straightforward, with no harsh surfactants, phosphates, or added fragrance—good news for families with kids and anyone with sensitive skin. Performance holds up too: the blend tackles everyday grime, softens hard water, and helps whites keep their brightness.

What you need

You are working with three simple staples, each pulling its weight:

1) Laundry soap (72%) — 200 g. Its high fatty-acid content gives solid cleaning power.

2) Washing soda — 200 g. A strong booster that cuts grease, lifts stubborn stains, and softens hard water.

3) Borax (sodium tetraborate) — 200 g. A naturally occurring helper that brightens, neutralizes odors, and adds more water-softening muscle.

How to make the gel

  1. Grate 200 g of 72% laundry soap on the fine side of your grater. Finer shavings melt faster.
  2. Tip the soap shavings into a pot, add 2 liters of hot water, and warm over medium heat. Stir until fully dissolved and keep the temperature just under a simmer.
  3. While stirring, slowly add 200 g of washing soda and 200 g of borax. The mixture will thicken and may foam a little—totally normal. Keep stirring until smooth and uniform.
  4. Take the pot off the heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature. For a light scent, add 10–15 drops of your favorite essential oil (lavender or tea tree work well).
  5. As it cools, you will get a thick, paste-like gel that may firm up a bit more over time.

How to use it

Gel version: Use 2–3 tablespoons per standard load. Add it straight into the drum or into the detergent drawer.

Prefer a dry mix with zero cooking? Combine 200 g of soap shavings, 200 g of washing soda, and 200 g of borax. Store the blend in an airtight jar and use the same 2–3 tablespoons per load.

Good to know

This recipe shines with cotton, linen, and most synthetics. Keep wool and silk on their own gentle, specialty detergents. Aim for 40–60°C to help the soap dissolve and rinse clean; warmer cycles deliver the best results. That is the whole playbook: simple ingredients, straightforward method, clean clothes, and a friendlier bill.
