X-Men ’97 Season 2 is raising the stakes: Ross Marquand teases multiple major character deaths, hinting that Gambit’s gut-punch farewell may not be the season’s most shocking loss.

Sounds like X-Men '97 Season 2 is not here to play nice. Voice actor Ross Marquand is teasing a darker, bloodier batch of episodes — the kind of swing you do not expect Disney to rubber-stamp — and yes, the body count might make Gambit's exit last season look like a pre-game warm-up.

So, what did Marquand actually say?

Speaking with Collider's Maggie Lovitt at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, Marquand laid it out pretty bluntly:

"I was amazed Disney greenlit it because it is so dark. It is very, very dark. A lot of people die... Just being honest."

If you watched Season 1, you remember the gut punch: Gambit sacrificing himself in Episode 5 to save Rogue from a nuclear blast. Marquand is basically saying, prepare for more — and possibly worse. That is a bold claim, considering the show already got pretty heavy for a Saturday-morning-throwback that turned into a critical darling.

Apocalypse now (and in rags?)

Marquand also confirmed he is back as Apocalypse in Season 2 and mentioned something oddly specific: he is "dressed in rags." For a voice actor, that is a funny detail to flag, but it likely hints at where Apocalypse is when we pick back up — not his usual god-tier presentation, at least at first. If you caught the end of Season 1, you know he is being positioned for a bigger role.

Who is onboard for Season 2

  • Ross Marquand as Apocalypse
  • Holly Chou as Jubilee
  • Ray Chase as Cyclops
  • Lenore Zann as Rogue
  • George Buza as Beast
  • Cal Dodd as Wolverine

When can we watch it?

Season 2 is slated to hit Disney+ sometime next year. No exact date yet — just the promise that the tone is getting darker and the stakes (and casualties) are going up.

Bottom line: If Disney actually signed off on what Marquand is hinting at, Season 2 might outdo Season 1's most shocking moment. And if you are still recovering from Gambit, maybe start bracing now.
