Worst Possible Ending for Stranger Things is Still Better Than What Duffers Did in Season 3
Fans speculate what terrible endings may await season 5, yet none of them can compare with the mistakes made during the show's third season.
Stranger Things fans eagerly awaiting the fifth and final season of the show, due for release next year, have already started speculating about how the franchise will conclude. A recent Reddit thread titled 'What would be the worst possible ending for Stranger Things 5?' got the community talking.
Naturally, the floodgates opened and fans poured in with their ideas of what they thought should be avoided in the final season.
Many fans warned against predictable and clichéd storylines, such as a flash-forward to the young characters as adults in the present day. Others felt that the idea of Eleven sacrificing herself or her powers would also be incredibly unsurprising. One particularly cringe-worthy suggestion was to end the series with the title itself: with Will ending the last episode with the words 'stranger things have happened', leaving viewers facepalming at the idea of cheesy dialogue.
Other familiar tropes to steer clear of included the redemption of Vecna. Simply turning him good to save Henry Creel and resolving everything by destroying the evil inside. Alternatively, any plot that involves time travel.
Still, among the discussions surrounding potential endings, one thing is clear, no matter how terrible the fans' worst-case scenarios may be, they can't possibly be any worse than what the Duffer Brothers delivered in Season 3.
While Stranger Things has continued to prosper and even had a much-loved season 4, Season 3 was an unfortunate low for the series. Its storyline was arguably the least memorable, deviating from the mystery-style format that fans had grown to love in the earlier seasons. Additionally, the plot took longer to hit its stride, even if the finale was action-packed, resulting in a much slower pace throughout.
However, maybe the worst point of the entire season was the decision to kill off Billy at the end. Just as he was becoming more dynamic and involved, the character's life felt annoyingly cut short. While the character was widely seen as problematic and undeserving of a redemption arc, his death was too sudden, resulting in a much less impactful self-sacrifice scene that upset both Billy fans and Billy haters.
Although Billy's death set things up nicely for Max's ongoing struggles later on, it also represents one of the show's most significant failings and wasted potential.
While the fans' imagined bad endings for Stranger Things' final season might come off as predictable and cheesy, there's little doubt that the show is set to end phenomenally. With the next season ready to continue from the cliffhanger finale of Season 4, and the culmination of everything the franchise has accomplished so far, as long as it avoids the flaws of Season 3, Stranger Things will surely provide a satisfying conclusion for its devoted fan base. The Duffer Brothers have a chance to redeem themselves for killing Billy and send off the beloved show in style. Let's just hope they don't take any of these speculations as actual suggestions.
