Patty Jenkins reveals where she stands on directing James Gunn’s DCU Wonder Woman reboot, after guiding Gal Gadot through the 2017 blockbuster and Wonder Woman 1984 — and seeing a planned third film scrapped in 2022.

Patty Jenkins isn't sprinting back to Themyscira, but she's not locking the gates either. The Wonder Woman director just weighed in on whether she'd take on the character again under James Gunn's DCU, while Gunn and Peter Safran offered small (but real) updates on where the Amazons go next.

Where Jenkins stands right now

Jenkins, who directed Gal Gadot in 2017's Wonder Woman and 2020's Wonder Woman 1984, was asked by Marvel Cinematic Universe News if she'd return for the DCU's Themyscira project. She made it pretty simple:

"You know what, you never say never because I love Wonder Woman. But, at the moment, I am so excited with what I am doing, and it's always good to do something new."

She added that she enjoyed making superhero movies and is having a good time with what she's doing now. Translation: she's not campaigning for the job, but the door isn't closed.

Quick refresher

A third Jenkins/Gadot Wonder Woman was in the works once upon a time, but it was scrapped in December 2022 after a leadership change at the studio. Since then, the character's future shifted into the new DCU slate Gunn and Safran are building.

So what is DC actually making?

The current Amazon-side project is a Themyscira-set series called Paradise Lost. Gunn hasn't shared much in the way of script or casting specifics, but as of a DC event in February 2025, he said the show is actively moving forward and going well. Safran added the pilot is being written right now. In other words: it exists, it's alive, and it's being worked on.

Casting vibes, not resumes

In July 2025, Gunn was asked if he'd target a TV actor for Wonder Woman the way he cast Milly Alcock for Supergirl. His answer boiled down to: he doesn't care if someone comes from TV, films, or anywhere else — he just wants the best person for the role. Alcock wasn't about pedigree; she was simply the pick.

The state of play, at a glance

  • 2017: Patty Jenkins directs Wonder Woman, starring Gal Gadot.
  • 2020: Sequel Wonder Woman 1984 lands, also directed by Jenkins.
  • December 2022: Planned third film is canceled after a studio leadership shakeup.
  • February 2025: Gunn says Themyscira series Paradise Lost is still a priority and in active development; Safran says the pilot is being written.
  • July 2025: Gunn says Wonder Woman casting won't be limited by TV vs. film backgrounds — it's about who fits.

Bottom line: Jenkins is happy where she is and isn't chasing a DCU return, but she'll never say never. Meanwhile, the Amazons are headed to TV first with Paradise Lost, and casting — whenever that starts — will be about the right person, not their medium.
