Agonizing over Wizard or Witch? Don’t. In Hogwarts Legacy, the pick is purely cosmetic—no perks, no penalties, no impact on your adventure.

Quick PSA for anyone finally booting up Hogwarts Legacy thanks to a timely freebie: do not burn brain cells on the Witch vs Wizard toggle in the character creator. It looks like a Big Choice. It is not.

About that Witch vs Wizard choice

Here is the deal: picking Witch or Wizard does not change your abilities, quests, dialogue, or how the story plays out. The only thing it actually touches is where your character sleeps. Choose Witch and you land in the witches dorm. Choose Wizard and you are placed in the wizards dorm. That is it. Everything else is identical.

One catch worth noting: you cannot flip this later. Once you lock it in, your dorm assignment is set for the rest of the game. So pick what feels right, but do not overthink it.

Why the game is suddenly everywhere again

Hogwarts Legacy has been out for a while (it launched February 10, 2023, from Avalanche Software), but it is back in the spotlight because the Epic Games Store is giving it away. Yes, actually free to claim until December 18, 2025. If you have been curious or you just want to stash it for later, this is the moment.

How to claim it on Epic

  • Open the Epic Games Store app or head to the website and search for Hogwarts Legacy.
  • Hit the "Get" button.
  • Go through the quick checkout flow (no charge).
  • It will drop into your library, ready whenever you are.

Quick refresher: what you are getting

This is an open-world action RPG set in the Harry Potter universe, but a century before Harry shows up. You play a student in the 1800s who is tied to an ancient secret with the potential to blow up the wizarding world if it falls into the wrong hands. Expect a lot of exploring familiar locations, fighting beasts and bad guys, brewing potions, and learning spells as you build out your character. There is plenty to do if you like getting lost in side quests and collectibles.

So, are you rolling in as a Witch or a Wizard? And no, it will not make you stronger or unlock hidden quests. It just picks your dorm bed.
