At the Anaconda world premiere in Los Angeles, Paul Rudd addressed whether he’ll return as Josh for a Clueless TV series, as Alicia Silverstone reportedly eyes the project.

Paul Rudd just weighed in on the new Clueless TV series, and if you were hoping for a Josh-and-Cher reunion, temper those expectations. He was asked on a red carpet and gave a very Rudd answer: polite, curious, and basically a no.

What Rudd actually said

During an Entertainment Tonight interview on the carpet at the 'world premiere' of Anaconda (yes, that title made me do a double take) at The United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles — that venue is in LA despite the name — Rudd was asked if he is part of the upcoming Clueless follow-up series reportedly in the works. His response:

'I don’t know. I don’t think so.'

'Like you, I saw that they were making that. So I’m curious. It’s exciting.'

As far as I can tell, this is the first time he has publicly commented on the project.

So where is this Clueless series right now?

Reports started circling back in April that a Clueless sequel series is being developed, with Alicia Silverstone expected to return as Cher Horowitz. Then in August, Silverstone told TODAY the whole thing is still very early. Her words:

'Not much. I’m really excited about it. I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honor what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.'

  • April: Multiple outlets report a new Clueless series is in the works, with Silverstone eyed to reprise Cher.
  • August: Silverstone tells TODAY the project is in 'baby stages' and the aim is to honor the film and the character.
  • Now: Rudd says he doesn’t think he’s involved and only knows what we know.

Quick Clueless refresher

Rudd played Josh in the 1995 movie opposite Silverstone’s Cher. The film — loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma — turned into a pop-culture time capsule and spun off a sitcom a year later. That series ran three seasons with Rachel Blanchard taking over as Cher, and featured Stacey Dash, Elisa Donovan, Donald Faison, and Julie Brown among the main cast. And if you want to feel old: the original movie marked its 30th anniversary this year.

Bottom line: Silverstone is excited and trying to make it happen, the show is still early, and Rudd doesn’t think he’s part of it. If that changes, he’ll probably be just as surprised as we are.
