The show's creator and star has opened up about its future.

Summary

  • Family Guy is one of the most popular adult cartoons on television.
  • The sitcom has been around for twenty-five years.
  • Seth MacFarlane says he sees no reason to end the show anytime soon.

Of all the genres of TV shows, adult animation is probably the strangest. Combining the look of the next children's show, such as Peppa Pig, with the boldest humor and themes, adult cartoons make for a very unusual viewing experience. But perhaps that is why they are so popular with audiences.

Currently, there are many adult animation shows, most of which have nothing to do with comedy. Amazon Prime Video's hit animated series Invincible, for example, has drawn hordes of viewers over its two-season run.

But there are classics of the genre that have been decades in the making. And Seth MacFarlane's Family Guy is arguably one of the most famous animated shows for adults.

Family Guy's Tenure

Seth MacFarlane's animated sitcom has been around for so long that most of you, dear readers, can't remember a time when Family Guy didn't exist. But while the show is a success, that wasn't always the case, as FG was canceled early on.

When it premiered in 1999, Family Guy was moderately well received by audiences who welcomed a show more daring than The Simpsons and a bit less offensive than South Park. However, Fox, FG's home network, canceled the show after three seasons on the air. Fortunately, this happened at a time when hard media were still popular and in demand, and the animated sitcom lived on in the form of DVDs and reruns on other networks.

Eventually, Family Guy developed a cult following and Fox picked it up again in 2005. Since then, the show has been a staple of American television, spanning a whopping twenty-two seasons in its twenty-five years on the air. And it seems that Seth MacFarlane, FG's creator and the actor behind many of the characters, has no intention of ending the sitcom just yet.

Family Guy Doesn't Need to End Anytime Soon

'There was a time when I said, "Hey, let's wrap it up while we're going strong,"' Seth MacFarlane revealed during a recent meetup with his co-stars and producers organized by The Los Angeles Times.

But according to the actor, there's no need to do that now. And the reason is as simple and plain as it gets – people still love Family Guy.

'At this point, I don't see a good reason to stop. People still love it. It makes people happy and I don't know if there's any reason to stop at this point unless people get sick of it. Unless the numbers show that people just are, "Eh, we don't care about Family Guy anymore." But that hasn't happened yet,' MacFarlane explained.

Season 22 of Family Guy just wrapped, so hopefully the cult animated sitcom for adults will continue to bring joy to our lives.
