Will Aegon End Up Being Fan Favorite in House of the Dragon Season 2?
It seems that House of the Dragon can go one of two ways with Tom Glynn-Carney's character.
The Game of Thrones prequel introduced Aegon Targaryen as the eldest surviving son of King Viserys and one of the major characters. Season 2 is set to give this character even more importance, as he is now King Aegon II and the one leading the Greens in the civil war against Rhaenyra and Daemon Targaryen.
But will this character manage to become a fan favorite in the coming episodes? That's exactly what fans have been discussing on Reddit lately.
So far, the sympathies of House of the Dragon viewers lied with the Black side of the dragon-riding family. Fans were obsessed with Rhaenyra's story and her romance with Daemon, even though it had its share of gray morality. But as the Dance of the Dragons breaks out, fans' sympathies may change.
The thing is, in George R. R. Martin's books, Aegon is a pivotal character who plays a significant role in the history of Westeros and the fate of his half-sister. This means that viewers will definitely see more of Aegon's Tom Glynn-Carney on screen in the second season and may find themselves sympathizing with him, just as they have with Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones.
Season 2 is supposed to be all about the confrontation between the Greens and the Blacks, so fans think the show's creators will probably go one of two ways.
They will either continue with the good-guy-bad-guy narrative, in which case Aegon will serve as the bad guy and his negative traits will only be highlighted, or they may try to balance things out, in which case Rhaenyra and Daemon will be shown in a negative light and Aegon may be given a redemption arc.
Either way, viewers find Aegon has a long way to go to become a fan favorite.
While Tom Glynn-Carney's performance is brilliant, with everything the Prince was shown to do in Season 1, the writers just never gave his character a chance to be likable. The way he sexually abused a servant girl and had his bastards thrown into the fighting pits made him almost irredeemable. To make up for all that, Aegon will have to change profoundly.
'I think Aegon will either become a far more complex character as time goes on, or we will constantly be reminded that he's supposed to be a sexual deviant and an [abuser] and to hate him,' a fan wrote on Reddit, summing up the discussion.
