In the words of the great philosopher Nelly Furtado, "All good things come to an end," and beloved tv shows are no exception.

While some soap operas replace the fourth generation of actors playing characters in coma, more story-driven shows rarely go beyond a 10-season run. And some of these more "serious" shows even go out with a bang instead of a whimper, which is rare but still happens.

Some television is clever and innovative, some is nostalgic or wonderfully trashy, and the only thing that remains the same is the love of fans who keep discussing their favorite shows and characters and spinning theories that can startle even the most experienced screenwriters.

Such is the case with the How I Met Your Mother fandom.

Nearly a decade after the show's last season and hour-long final episode, fans are sharing their wildest theories about the sitcom, its characters, and plot. Though they are complete and utter conspiracies, some ideas are crazier than the flat-earth theory. And they are dark and gruesome too.

As you may know from How I Met Your Mother's grand finale, Ted, the main character and narrator, finally settled down and married Tracy, the mother of his children, whom the entire show is about.

But a few years into the marriage, she suddenly died, and Ted was reunited with the love of his life, Robin. And one Redditor suggests that this is no coincidence.

They theorize that Ted realized he wasn't meant for married life and enjoyed the quest for love far more than his actual marriage. He enjoyed living and being with his friend, who Robin definitely was. But Ted couldn't leave his wife after all those years of his “struggle” to find her, and especially now that they had children together.

So he poisoned her, which led to her unexpected death from an "unknown illness."

This piece of conspiracy becomes even darker and more frightening when you realize that the whole story Ted has been telling his children is a cover-up for his crime. Some How I Met Your Mother fans are so astonished that they've renamed the sitcom "How I Got Away with Murder", in imitation of another famous show.

“Honestly that would make a lot of sense. Throughout the entire story we realize that Ted never really wanted to be married, he just wanted to chase after his perfect, unrealistic version of happily ever after, preferably with Robin,” writes one of Reddit users.

Perhaps the most startling thing about this theory, aside from its darkness, is its seeming plausibility. So much so that even the most lighthearted fans of the sitcom can't help but meditate on it. And now you can't either...
