Blockbuster musical Wicked: For Good has been shut out of this year’s Oscar nominations, leaving fans stunned and industry insiders asking what went wrong.

If you were hoping for Wicked: For Good to make a splash with the Oscars this year, brace yourself—because the Academy wasn’t feeling the magic this time around. The sequel to last year’s much-hyped Wicked got shut out completely: zero nominations. That’s right, nada, zip, zilch, even with all the built-in buzz (and some shameless Oscar baiting, to be honest).

Wait, Seriously? Not Even a Single Nom?

Just to put this in perspective, the first Wicked movie (the 2025 one) got showered with love—10 nominations, including Best Picture and both acting categories for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. It even took home awards for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. That’s not nothing!

This time around, everyone figured Ariana Grande would at least sneak in with another Supporting Actress nod for all that bubblegum-pink Glinda energy. Plus, Wicked: For Good added two brand new songs (not in the Broadway show), and let’s be honest: new songs in sequels usually scream “Please nominate us for something!” Didn’t matter. The Academy’s reaction: hard pass, even on Best Original Song.

Who Got Those Song Nominations, Then?

The slots went to a pretty eclectic (some might say, head-scratching) mix instead:

  • Kpop Demon Hunters
  • Sinners
  • Train Dreams
  • Diane Warren: Relentless (seriously, how many Oscar noms does she have by now?)
  • Viva Verdi!

Other Big Surprise Snubs

And Wicked: For Good wasn’t the only one left in the nomination cold. Here’s a rapid-fire rundown of some notable absences:

- Chase Infiniti didn’t get nominated for One Battle After Another, where she played Leonardo DiCaprio’s rebellious teen daughter. Considering all the buzz about her performance, that’s a major snub.
- Park Chan-wook’s dark comedy No Other Choice was left out of the Best International Feature category, even though “buzzy” would be putting it mildly.
- Paul Mescal was also missing from the Best Actor list for playing William Shakespeare in Hamnet—which is wild since the movie scored eight other nominations. (Instead, Delroy Lindo of Sinners grabbed a surprise slot.)

Mark Your Calendar (If You Still Care)
