It looks like the latest season might be the last for the show.

After four long years of waiting, Charlie Brooker finally premiered the sixth season of Black Mirror earlier this month, inviting Netflix subscribers to once again dive into his macabre dystopian vision of our current times. Sadly, it looks like most fans were not impressed with the new Black Mirror installment, saying that this hodgepodge of half-baked episodes is far inferior in quality compared to earlier seasons and lacks that distinct vibe that once got them hooked on the series.

However, after the disaster that was Season 5, the current season actually looks much better in comparison. At least two episodes, 'Loch Henry' and 'Beyond the Sea,' managed to impress fans, forcing some to call the new season a true return to form for Brooker. But with that in mind, the vast majority of Black Mirror fandom is still quite critical of the latest season. Here's why Season 6 failed to appeal to longtime fans.

First of all, Black Mirror is no longer a dystopian show about technology, as most of this season's episodes deal with other social issues, including stalking and true-crime obsession. These themes are fascinating and would work well for any other show, but fans expected so much more from Brooker's creation, and they certainly hoped that the new episodes would deal with more disturbing, technology-centered ideas.

On top of that, while some of this season's episodes were perfectly fine in terms of writing, directing, and acting, their connection to Black Mirror actually did them a great disservice. Failing to produce the same level of fear and depression like the series' previous episodes, these new stories simply didn't appeal to viewers, who couldn't see their merits because they expected something completely different.

'The original seasons have an aura to them, and I'm not just saying that because they came first. They are eerie and captivating. These [new] episodes just don't evoke that haunting, uneasy feeling I got the first time watching "Fifteen Million Merits",' one fan noted.

It looks like Charlie Brooker needs to fix something in his approach to new seasons of Black Mirror, or his fans will simply stop watching the show.
